Former nurse Margaret Adamson's best hope of successfully beating non-Hodgkin's lymphoma was the new drug Zevalin, which is available on the NHS in other areas but not the North East.

The 59-year-old's consultant at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary, Dr Anne Lennard, made a direct plea for Zevalin funding to NHS North of Tyne. But health bosses refused to budge on a decision not to offer the drug in the region, taken by the North of England Cancer Network in March 2007.
